Maddy Hamrick’s journey at Mondelēz has been a steady unfolding of curiosity, capability and quiet determination. She entered the business four years ago as a Process Engineer for Ritz, quickly becoming known for the way she could spot small shifts that created big improvements. From focused improvement to leading productivity, each role has expanded her influence and sharpened her craft. Her story is a look at what happens when a talent for problem-solving meets an environment that rewards growth, collaboration and bold thinking.
What’s something about your role that people might be surprised to learn?
As a Productivity Lead, while the output is measured in savings and improved cost per pound, the day-to-day reality is often more about being a catalyst for strategic change and a collaborative problem-solver across the plant. We are constantly looking for innovative ways to produce our products better, faster, and with less. In my role, I collaborate with all departments like engineering, operations, maintenance, and supply chain to identify inefficiencies and opportunities. A significant portion of my job involves influencing others to implement change. People are at the heart of productivity, and successful initiatives require their engagement and commitment.
What first drew you to Mondelēz, and how did your journey begin as a Process Engineer for Ritz?
My journey into the world of food manufacturing was sparked by my passion for food and my engineering background. I was actively seeking an opportunity where these two core strengths could converge and the Process Engineer role at Mondelēz presented the perfect match. This position served as my entry into the company and allowed me invaluable experience working directly on the iconic Ritz line.
Immersing myself in operations provided me with a deep understanding of the process flows and day-to-day manufacturing, not just for Ritz, but for our other brands and production lines too. The knowledge I gained of the processes, the equipment and the people through the Process Engineer role has remained vital to every role I’ve been in since.
How has your approach to work evolved from your early days to now leading Productivity?
In my early days as a Process Engineer, my work was primarily dedicated to reactive problem-solving and addressing daily operational challenges alongside a small line-centric team. As I’ve progressed through process engineering to continuous improvement, and now to productivity, my strategies have definitely changed.
Currently, I have taken on more leadership where I collaborate cross-functionally and my focus has shifted from daily tactical issues to now driving long-term, sustainable improvements. Also, my influence now extends beyond just our local site. I actively partner with our regional teams to standardize and replicate best practices across a broader manufacturing network.
How has the culture at Mondelēz shaped your journey?
The culture at Mondelēz absolutely has been instrumental in shaping my journey. For me, Mondelēz, and the Richmond Bakery in particular, is a place that fosters an incredible sense of community. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside colleagues who not only champion my development but actively contribute to it. Their encouragement continually inspires me to expand my capabilities and embrace opportunities for growth that I might not have otherwise pursued.
If you could offer your younger self one piece of advice on navigating manufacturing roles, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that the things that make you uncomfortable are your biggest opportunities for growth. The feeling of discomfort is a primary indicator that you are pushing your boundaries and moving forward. A comfort zone can be a nice place, but nothing ever grows there!
Maddy’s path reflects a kind of progress that feels both grounded and inspiring. Each chapter has been shaped by a willingness to learn, a drive to elevate the work, and a steady commitment to improving how things run, one thoughtful step at a time. Her experience captures what makes Mondelēz a place where people can evolve, experiment and thrive. For anyone imagining their own path in manufacturing or improvement, her journey offers a reassuring spark: growth is seldom a straight line, but it can be a deeply rewarding one.
