From production worker at 18 to Line Leader at 35 - Hristo Iliev has spent 16 years growing with the Kazichene plant. His journey through Chipita's transformation into Mondelēz is one of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment. Here, he shares what it takes to lead, why he stays, and what keeps him motivated after all these years.

Please introduce yourself and tell me about your career journey.

My name is Hristo Iliev. I am 35 and based at the Kazichene plant. I joined Mondelēz (then Chipita) at 18 and, over 16 years, progressed from a production worker in a CELLA role to Dough Maker, packaging machine operator, Team Leader, and currently Line Leader.

During this time I worked across multiple production lines, acquired broad operational knowledge, and assumed increasing responsibility, including leading two teams across two lines. Following Mondelēz’s acquisition of Chipita, the introduction of new structures and standards created further development opportunities and led to my promotion to Line Leader.

In my current role I set objectives, provide mentorship, and maintain a supportive environment that enables the team to meet targets. I take pride in contributing to the establishment of Mondelēz culture at the plant and remain committed to continuous improvement and future challenges.

What personal qualities or skills make you successful in your position and what do you suggest for a candidate?

To be successful in a Line Leader position in a large international company, personal qualities such as strong communication skills, effective leadership abilities, and problem-solving skills are essential. Candidates should focus on developing and showcasing their communication abilities, seeking opportunities to lead and demonstrate their capabilities, and toning their problem-solving skills. It is also important to be adaptive and eager to learn. The dynamic atmosphere requires motivation, flexibility, and sustainability of all its employees.

What advice would you give to young people looking to get into this field and any tips you have learnt along the way?

Develop leadership skills and seek learning opportunities; find mentors and build strong professional network; take on leadership roles and believe in yourself-by following these steps, you can pave the way towards becoming a Line Leader.

What do you like the best in MDLZ?

I appreciate the inclusive culture at MDLZ, where different perspectives and ideas are valued. The company's commitment to innovation and continuous improvement is also highly regarded, as it encourages employees to think creatively and contribute to the development of new products and processes. Additionally, the company's focus on corporate social responsibility and making a positive impact on communities resonates with me.

What is the most exciting project you worked on in MDLZ?

Most of the projects I have been part of are really exciting and challenging, but I believe the most exciting ones are starting implementation of 5S standard and being a facilitator of the project “Safety as a value” as both are dynamic, and they provoke me on a daily basis. Also, being an owner of Autonomous Maintenance Pillar for 1 and a half year helped me enrich my knowledge for the upcoming Integrated Lean 6 sigma journey.

Why do you continue to choose MDLZ?

I choose to continue working in the same company for various reasons. I value the opportunities for career growth and advancement within the organization, the stability that comes with staying in a familiar work environment, and the relationships and networks I have built over time. These factors contribute to a sense of professional development, job security, and a supportive community that make my staying with the same company a compelling choice. For more than 15 years I have felt Chipita/ MDLZ as my second family.

What is your favorite MDLZ brand?

One of my favorite Mondelēz brands is 7DAYS croissant. It is more emotional because I associate it with my career development and the growth I have in the company. My second favorite brand is Oreo and it is because of the taste.
