Building My Career

I started with Mondelez International as a Maintenance Planning Manager, and after few weeks of settling in, my responsibilities have grown day by day! Now, reporting to my Continuous Improvement Engineering Manager, I’m in charge of all the planned and breakdown maintenance in the “Jellies” Section.

Working at Our Sheffield Site

Coming from another country, I believe that the best thing I’ve seen here in Sheffield is the possibility to grow fast and in the right direction. My manager is giving me the opportunity to take responsibility and make my own choices, and I strongly believe it is the right way to develop future Managers. I do really appreciate this aspect and I do really enjoy it. Working in Sheffield is really challenging, but at the same time is very satisfying. After couple of months to settle in, now I’m feeling part of a big family!

Favorite product?

My favorite Mondelez International Product is definitely Bassetts Winegums.

Starting Out with Mondelez International

I knew upon graduation I wanted to work within the FMCG sector, and the graduate scheme which MDLZ offered encapsulated everything I wanted to develop within the beginning of my career. The food and drink industry provides really varied processes and equipment to work with, as well as many different challenges!

I’ve just started my current placement in Bern, where we make Toblerone, after spending 15 months in Sheffield, most recently as a Team Leader within the Ritz Crisp & Thin line. This line is completely new to Sheffield, and is an incredibly exciting time for everyone. Being part of a team witnessing the installation and commissioning of a line, and being a part of the ramp up process to full production has helped me gain a completely new experience and all the learnings that go alongside. I have been supporting the team through their training, and utilizing a number of Integrated Lean 6 Sigma tools such as centerlining machinery and equipment to help the line run at its best.

I think what makes MDLZ different from other FMCG companies is the culture. The people who form this organization are incredibly supportive, and help make this a great place to work. While based in Sheffield, I was able to explore many different routes for an engineer, and everyone was incredibly accommodating in enabling me to do so.

My Advice for Other Engineering Students

Whatever sector you are interested in, make every effort to gain industrial experience in your chosen field while studying. Whether it is a year in industry (which I did), or a summer placement, having relevant experience prior to graduation will help you progress through a very competitive application process. Once industry experience is gained, you will have plenty of developmental experience to draw on in interviews, which will ultimately help you get the job in the first place! If you find yourself in a Manufacturing based role as myself, begin by shadowing operators. Listening is a key skill, and very important when you are early on in your career. If you charge straight in and start barking orders without fully understanding what is going on you risk alienating operators from the start.

A bit about me…

I Joined MDLZ Sheffield in the summer of 2012, I was recruited to build and then lead the “new start” Oreo and belVita biscuit operation. In the summer of 2015 I moved across to the Candy side of the business to lead my current department.

Over my years in the food industry I have increased my technical knowledge in Health & Safety, Food Safety and more recently in MDLZ Sheffield, I have become increasingly familiar with Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) through MDLZ’s Integrated Lean 6 Sigma ways of working. I have also increased my self-awareness and personal effectiveness through the ‘Being at My Best’ development program that MDLZ employees are offered.

The best thing about working for Mondelēz International are the many iconic brands that you see both globally and in the UK, there is no better feeling than seeing a product that you have helped to manufacture being enjoyed by friends and family.

Our Sheffield Site

Sheffield is a traditional UK manufacturing site that has been located in its current location for over 100 years. This brings with it a number of challenges to ensure that we constantly improve in all that we do. However, when the site focuses on a challenge, it delivers. This leads to an enormous sense of both personal and professional satisfaction.

Living in Sheffield

Sheffield is a diverse city with two large universities and a strong manufacturing heritage. Situated centrally within the UK it offers easy access to many of the country’s interesting places to visit. The city center is vibrant after having many millions of pounds spent on it over recent years, and there are now many places to eat, drink and relax. There is also easy access to the Peak District National Park, one of the UK’s areas of outstanding beauty. In short, living in Sheffield offers both city and rural living, the choice is yours!

Favorite product?

It’s too difficult to choose! But if I was pushed I would have to choose Trebor Softmints as a UK product, and globally Oreo… Oreo is the reason that I first joined the company!
