At Mondelēz International, we’re proud to spotlight our leaders whose journeys reflect the spirit of growth, resilience, and purpose. Morgan Dumont, our Vice President of Convenience Channel & Distributors, embodies all of this and more. Starting in 2008 as a Management Development Associate, Morgan’s path to VP has been nothing short of inspiring — built on a foundation of curiosity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the consumer.
We sat down with Morgan to reflect on her journey, her leadership philosophy, and the evolving retail landscape she helps shape.
You’ve had a remarkable journey within Mondelēz, what has motivated you to stay and grow within the organization?
I've been with Mondelēz just over 17 years, and several factors have motivated me to stay as long as I have - first and foremost has been an incredibly supportive group of leaders, mentors, and peers who have invested time in my personal and professional development and many of whom I consider close friends. Second has been the breadth and variety of career opportunities available over the years that have pushed me outside my comfort zone and challenged me to consistently learn and grow. And third has been the incredible portfolio of brands we represent - there are very few places one can travel across the globe where a Mondelēz product isn't present, and to know that each of us that works here has a part in representing and growing that brand equity every day is unique and special.
What advice would you give to someone who is hoping to grow within a large organization like Mondelēz?
For someone hoping to grow with a large organization like Mondelēz, I'd give the following advice:
- Take initiative and proactively seek out challenges outside your comfort zone: Whether it's being open to moving to a new geography or city, volunteering for a new project or task, or taking on a new role, these experiences all help to grow your existing skillset and be more well-rounded both personally and professionally.
- Build strong relationships and network outside of your day-to-day role: Foster open communication and trust with peers and managers, attend industry events and stay current on news, join Employee Resource Groups that align to your values, and engage on professional platforms like LinkedIn that can help you expand your network.
- Focus on results and be a reliable contributor: Consistently demonstrating that you can be trusted to deliver timely and high-quality work not only develops your own skillset but also opens the door for new and expanded opportunities.
- Be agile: Change is constant and very little turns out exactly the way you plan, but if you stay focused on the controllables while being open to the possibility of different outcomes and new experiences, you will grow and develop.
How has your leadership style evolved over the years and what do you look for when identifying and developing talent within your teams?
I think leadership is a continuous process of learning, growing, and adapting one's approach to fit the needs of different teams and evolving external circumstances. Over the years, I've come to see effective leadership as less about black and white top-down directives and more about fostering a culture of open collaboration and accountability. Building high performing and well-rounded teams also means acknowledging that as a leader, you can't be an expert in everything - surrounding yourself with diverse perspectives and teammates with complementary skillsets to your own ultimately enables the entire team to operate at its best. When I'm identifying and developing talent, I look for passionate and highly engaged individuals with diverse perspectives from my own who are self-starters, enjoy learning and challenging themselves, and hold themselves and their teams accountable for delivering results.
What excites you most about working in the convenience and distribution channel?
The reach and dynamic nature of the Convenience channel is what interests me most. Approximately 90% of Americans live within 10 minutes of a C-Store and 92% of shoppers visit at least once a week. Additionally, within the current macroeconomic landscape, traditional trip drivers in the channel are shifting from fuel and cigarettes to a growing role of the store itself, driven in part by the increasing role of food service - Convenience stores are fast becoming full-fledged food destinations vs simply pit stops for snacks. This shift in conjunction with a growing role of digital and retail loyalty app programs presents a unique opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers like Mondelēz to convert households and capture market share with loyalty-driven meal-deal bundling and 360 activations and cross-merchandising.
What are you most thrilled about in the future of Mondelēz International?
What most excites me about the future of Mondelēz is the company's bold "Vision 2030" commitment to sustainable growth and innovation. The strategy emphasizes a clear portfolio focus on priority snacking categories led by a clear understanding of evolving consumer trends and underpinned by exceptional brand equity. I'm eager to see how the company continues to lead in developing environmentally friendly products and packaging solutions. Additionally, the focus on digital transformation promises to enhance operational efficiencies and customer engagement. Leveraging data analytics and AI, Mondelēz aims to meet changing consumer preferences proactively and effectively.
