We’re committed to make a positive impact on people and planet
September 26, 2018 – So proud! Once again, Mondelēz International has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for both the North America and World indices. The DJSI is the gold-standard in sustainability rankings, with a strong focus on long-term value creation for shareholders. It is a globally recognized independent benchmark that measures the company’s leadership in corporate sustainability, based on an in-depth analysis of its economic, environmental and social performance.
Being included on the DJSI is a testament that the work we do each day is growing our positive impact in the world. Our success results from efforts across the company to produce our snacks more sustainably, using less energy, water, and waste and with ingredients consumers know and trust.
For example, we reduced our carbon footprint by 5,100 tonnes on an annual basis in our Port Elizabeth facility by purchasing electricity derived from solar energy. And in 2018, we extended our use of solar power by adding solar panels at our several of our production facilities.
We’re also sourcing our ingredients, such as cocoa and wheat, more sustainably and in ways that reduce deforestation in our supply chain. And we’re on track to meet our goal of eliminating 65,000 tonnes of packaging by 2020.
We’ve reported using 25 percent less water at priority locations where water is most scarce; as well as a 10 percent reduction in absolute CO2 emissions from manufacturing, and eliminating more than 53,500 metric tonnes of packaging material. And we increased the impact of Cocoa Life, our sustainable cocoa sourcing program, reaching 120,500 farmers in 1,085 communities, and sustainably sourcing 35 percent of our cocoa -- up 14 percentage points from 2016.
