Our 5000 employees work across 6 countries in the Northern Europe region including 9 manufacturing sites and 3 research and development facilities. We are proud to make some of the most iconic and much-loved brands including Cadbury, Freia, Marabou, Maynard Bassetts and Trebor. We are a powerhouse amongst Mondelēz International in Europe and generate around 32% of region net revenue. As well as this we hold a 38% market share in chocolate across NE, thanks to our iconic brands.

Love Our Consumers And Our Brands

Bournville is the home of Cadbury in the UK and founded in 1879 it produces thousands of delicious Cadbury chocolate products every day. Since 2010 the number of chocolate inventors and researchers in Bournville alone has grown from 25 to over 250, and every single Cadbury product, wherever in the world it ends up being sold, is invented in Bournville.

We have also been making chocolate in Ireland since the first Cadbury factory opened in Dublin, Ossory Road in 1933. In 1956, a new customized chocolate making factory opened on a green field site in Coolock, on the outskirts of Dublin, and we’re still there today. Coolock is also home to well-known Cadbury brands Flake and Twirl.

In the Nordics, we have well-known and beloved local brands such as Marabou, Freia, Kvikk Lunsj, Non Stop, Twist, Regia, Kong Haakon, Aladdin, Daim, V6, Stimorol and O’Boy. Oslo is the home to Freia, first launched in 1906 and still produced at our Rodeløkka site which opened in 1889. Marabou was born in 1916 and thousands of delicious Marabou chocolate products are produced every day at its manufacturing site in Upplands Väsby, just outside Stockholm.

In 2015, a £75 million investment into new machinery for the Bournville factory began securing the next generation of manufacturing at this iconic site. This was part of an overall £200 million investment into the UK in the last five years. £4.7 million has also been invested into our Reading Science Centre to support with the development of new and improved chocolate, biscuit and candy products for over 150 different countries. The extra investment in Reading will create 50 highly skilled jobs and will also accelerate our growth strategy by allowing us to meet the changing needs of customers whilst maintaining a competitive edge in the markets of tomorrow.

In 2021 Mondelēz International has announced plans to invest £15 million into its Bournville site, the heart and home of Cadbury. The investment will include £11 million to create a new, line of the future for Cadbury Dairy Milk tablets as the company consolidates the majority of its tablet production at the site. The new, highly efficient line will enable 125 million more of the iconic large sharing bars to be made at Bournville annually, with additional capacity for any future growth. Alongside the new line, Mondelēz is also planning to invest a further £4 million at the site to increase its chocolate making capacity, to ensure sufficient chocolate mass to meet current demand and anticipate future needs.

 

Do What’s Right

Our community impact is very important to us in Northern Europe. The Cadbury Foundation was set up in 1935 in recognition of company founders, George and Richard Cadbury and their investment in the welfare of their employees and wider communities. It supports local and national charities across Northern Europe to the focus areas of Wellbeing, Skills and Colleague Passions. One such example is our Health for Life community programme supporting nearly 150,000 people in Birmingham to lead healthier lifestyles over the last 10 years; This programme is recognized externally by Business in the Community and the Food and Drink Federation.

Volunteering is part of our company DNA and our Impact4Good global volunteer programme enables us to do the right thing whilst internally building a winning growth culture. With the help of our financial commitment from the Cadbury Foundation, colleagues can continue to volunteer time to help the communities where we live, work and thrive in Northern Europe. Every year during the Christmas season, our Norwegian colleagues donate productions to the Salvation Army and local organizations who supply food to those in need.
