Go Green

To demonstrate our commitment to social responsibility, we are committed to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing activities and promote the sustainability of the natural resources upon which we depend, while providing delicious products which meet the needs of our consumers.

Sustainability is a popular word these days, but what does it really mean? For Kraft Foods, it means living out its higher purpose to make today delicious not just through our brands, but in all aspects of our business. For us, sustainability is all about meeting the requirements of the present without compromising the needs of future generations.

As validation for our sustainable manufacturing initiatives, Kraft Foods Philippines received recognition last December 17, 2010 from the Philippine Environment Partnership Program (PEPP) Track 1 awards. This PEPP award is a coveted seal of approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

The “Go Green” project is a continuous framework for our Environmental Management Systems. Started in 2008, we aim to reduce, reuse and recycle in the following areas:

Water Management

Kraft Foods Philippines employs a number of steps to reduce the use of water. Inside its manufacturing facility are faucets with shut-down sensors which ensure that no water is wasted. We also have other measures to recycle water. Inside our plant in Sucat, Parañaque is a rainwater harvesting tank, which is part of a long-term strategy to recycle water.

In fact, inside the Kraft Foods compound is a fish pond which uses treated water from the plant. This pond serves as a testament to the cleanliness of the water returned to nature. These preventive efforts have helped reduce water usage by 22% since 2008.

Ozone Protection

Do you know your carbon footprint? It’s the environmental impact of your day-to-day energy-using activities like cooking and shopping. Get on the internet to know yours, using the number of sites which offer carbon footprint-reducing solutions.

Kraft Foods also wants to reduce its carbon footprint. That’s why we have been using HCFC-free air conditioning units in our office and plant. HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) is used for cooling which can harm the ozone layer. We now use a greener cooling technology which reduced 16% of our carbon footprint within 3 years.

Energy Conservation

In 2008 Kraft Foods analysed our total CO2 emission through an external accredited agency. Over a period of 3 years we systematically reduced our energy consumption and CO2 emission with an annualised target of 10% reduction year-on-year.

Kraft Foods thought of maximizing the endless sun Filipinos enjoy by installing solatubes inside our offices. These provide natural light from the sun and lessen the use of florescent lights. Solar lights for street lighting were installed and T5 lamps were replaced with energy-efficient LED lamps. Kraft Foods employees likewise work in open areas designed to maximize natural light during office hours. Read more about our Delicious Workplace.

Waste Management and Reducing Packaging Use

Under the “Go Green” project, Kraft Foods works to reduce packaging use and manufacturing waste. We want our food packaging to have little impact to the environment, for a truly delicious snacking experience. For this purpose, we are optimizing our packaging use and shifting to more sustainable materials. Similar to the ‘green bags’ found at groceries, Kraft Foods also has a “no plastic bags” policy at our in-house grocery.
