Tang

Tang is a powdered beverage that was first imported and sold in the Philippines in 1962. Ten years later, Tang developed a great following among Filipino consumers because of its beloved fruity taste.  This demand for the brand led to the creation of a local manufacturing facility, then located in San Pablo City, Laguna.

Previously under General Foods Philippines, Tang together with Calumet Baking Powder, formed the backbone of the growing General Foods portfolio. The brand became part of the Kraft Foods portfolio in 1989 when the two companies were integrated. Today, Tang is now a part of Mondelēz International, a new Company comprised of the global snacking and food brands of the former Kraft Foods Inc.

The first jar of Tang powdered beverage instant drink mix rolled off the production line in 1974. The first SKUs (stock keeping unit) of Tang were in 7oz, 18 oz and 27 oz in the now memorable glass jars.

The first Tang campaign in 1974 could be considered a pioneer for its time. This entailed a two-month saturation drive on TV, in-store sampling and mobile Tang trucks covering Metro Manila. From 1985 until 1989, Tang rapidly developed its variant and pack offerings, coming out with Pineapple and Grape flavors, and Tang Orange refill packs. Filipino consumers are top of mind for Tang so the brand introduced an unprecedented 25% price rollback in 1993.

Since then Tang has continued on this innovative path, creating products and campaigns which appeal to Filipino moms and their kids. Its great fruit taste and vitamin and mineral fortified formulation have made it the favourite powdered beverage in the country. Tang was also among the first products to comply with the Philippine Fortification Program “Sangkap Pinoy,” with its logo stamped on the brands’ packaging. Tang is available in Orange, Grape, Mangga, Pineapple, Orange-Mango, Pineapple-Orange, Sweet Ponkan, Strawberry and Apple flavours.

Meeting Filipino moms’ and kids’ needs is Tang’s business. In 2010 the brand took this mission to heart and released Tang Pick & Go. A uniquely-propositioned pack, it contains three Tang flavours in individual-serving sachets: Tang Orange, Tang Mango and Tang Pineapple. It is the perfect baon for kids because of its easy ‘rip, pour and shake’ serving. Each sachet is ready to mix with water for an instant fruit-flavoured drink.

Tang Iced Tea is the brand’s answer to fruit-flavoured iced tea. Launched in 2011, it comes in Lemon Iced Tea, Apple Iced Tea and Strawberry Iced Tea flavours.
