In conversation with No Thi Bich Ngoc, Health, Safety and Environment manager and Giang Nguyen Duc, Section Lead - Binh Duong Plant Vietnam on health & safety.

How do you drive a safe environment and culture in Mondelēz International?

We lead by example, commit & abide by processes and procedures. We then translate and share this with our team members and stakeholders with a clear message: Safety is not only the responsibility of the Health, Safety, and Environment department but also all employees together hand-in-hand to build the culture. Hence, we are running HSE training sessions and then giving a guideline for employees to practice, creating a room for them to raise their voices when needed to help and recognize and reward the ones who strive to make MDLZ a safe workplace.

Potential risks are always present in all areas of work & life; that is why we all need to learn risk management skills to protect ourselves. By driving toward a culture of zero-incident and optimum environmental footprint, we put the HSE work-place-live standard as a compass to prevent/minimize risks before they happen. – Ngo Thi Bich Ngoc

What makes you proud of working at Mondelēz International?

I am proud to be a part of #TeamMDLZ because the company always puts high standards for health, safety & environment in each of our products and employees & community that we are serving. This is evident through our values of Love Our Consumers & Brands and Do What’s Right – a commitment to the importance of promoting the safety culture as it is crucial to running a resilient business – Nguyen Duc Giang

I love the people surrounding me – leaders, managers & stakeholders who always support and promote HSE. It is a combination of human resources, time contribution, finance & facilities to deliver the best for our work. While in MDLZ, I learned many new safety-related improvements through continuous learning and getting constructive feedback from my stakeholders. – Ngo Thi Bich Ngoc

How do you apply the habit of being safe and careful in your daily job?

Creating a habit is not easy, but it is not impossible. At MDLZ, we are starting with raising awareness about safety via curated training sessions. Through these, we try to embed a shift in mindset on why safety is important and how our colleagues can consciously apply it in their daily tasks. MDLZ also supports us through structured guidelines and procedures to follow, resources to use, and a safe environment to thrive. – Ngo Thi Bich Ngoc

What makes sustainability a big agenda under Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE)?

Sustainability is one of our key priorities at MDLZ. We believe that ‘thinking big’ can change the industry for the better of people and the planet. We continuously plan and implement projects related to renewable energy and reducing the greenhouse effect. This includes reducing our carbon emissions by leveraging the biomass energy or installation of solar panels to limit the use of harmful resources such as coal and gas. – Ngo Thi Bich Ngoc

What would be your advice for anyone wanting to pursue an HSE career?

There are different ways to learn - Academic, case study, peer, and observation learning. And while they are all important and effective, they must also be coupled with practical application to associate this knowledge with reality. That’s why I think the MDLZ working environment provides the right opportunities and available resources for you to develop & grow if you are interested in self-learning. I advise anyone wanting to pursue a career in HSE to go for it!! Be willing to ask for help/support from others, ask for constructive feedback to be the better version of yourself. – Ngo Thi Bich Ngoc
